ADMINISTRATION

Why Administration?
This course enables you to develop a knowledge and understanding of many aspects of the world of work. It shows you how important it is for organisations to have effective administration. You will also learn Information Technology skills which are now important in many jobs, as well as in your personal life.

Course Outline
Administration uses technology to develop the skills and knowledge needed for the processing and communication of business information.

There are three main elements in this course:

  • Knowledge and Understanding
  • Problem Solving
  • Practical Abilities

Work is done on a variety of tasks which allow you to acquire these skills. Examples of these include -

  • learning about the importance of ICT (information communications technology) in all kinds of organisations. This refers to E-mail, Internet, CD ROM facility, Electronic Diary, Video Conferencing and Fax.
  • learning to use computer software and hardware, including word - processing, and the uses of spreadsheets and databases.
  • planning and organising work schedules
  • learning about health and safety at work.

The course covers many aspects of business life such as security of information, reception services, mail handling, flexible working practices, travel, meetings and reprographics.

Assessment

Administration is assessed at Foundation, General and Credit levels.

  • Knowledge and Understanding and Problem Solving are assessed by an external examination, set and marked by the SQA.
  • Practical Abilities are assessed on a series of tasks carried out in class time and sent to the SQA for marking.

Progression
Successfu1 completion of this course will normally lead to study -at the following levels:

  • A pass at Foundation Level - Intermediate 1
  • A pass at General Level - Intermediate 2#
  • A pass at Credit Level - Higher
